Angels Angels with Backpacks 2010
Angels with Backpacks is a non profit organization designed to provide the homeless with the essentials for winter survival. Schools and other community organizations were encouraged to participate and Midland Secondary School took up the challenge. Led by Mr. Jenkinson’s grade 12 Society class, the school collected donations from the community, and produced 20 filled backpacks ready to be distributed to those in need. Thank you to everyone who donated supplies and/or their time to filling the backpacks and making someone’s year a little better. .......SEE MORE

FoodDrive Salvation Army Food Drive
On Friday November 19, eight students from Midland Secondary School travelled to the Real Canadian Superstore to fill canvas reusable bags with non perishable foods. The students were able to fill 120 bags in support of the Salvation Army food drive. The bags are being sold at the Real Canadian Superstore for $5.00 with all proceeds going towards the Salvation Army

White Ribbon White Ribbon Campaign 2010
The Society: Challenge and Change class commemorated the anniversary of the mass killing at Ecole Polytechnique in 1989. The white ribbon campaign includes daily announcement, a “wear white” day and concluded with white ribbon day on December 6th. In addition students and staff were invited to sign a banner as a pledge to stop violence against women

MO-vember MO-vember 2010
Over 20 teachers and 25 students grew moustaches for the entire month, to raise awareness and money for prostate cancer research. We sold fake moustaches for students who couldn’t grow one – We called it our “Can’t grow so buy a Mo” promotion. On Nov 30, over 100 students and many teachers wore fake moustaches for the day. So far, Midland Secondary School staff and students raised over $2500 for prostate cancer research.

Truth Truth and Consequences- OSAID November 16 2010
You may be asking yourself “Is this some kind of new game show at MSS?” Well not exactly… Truth and Consequences is an all day conference held for grade 9 students that educates them about the “truth” and the “consequences” of drug and alcohol use. This is the fourth year that the OSAID (Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving) chapter at MSS has organized and hosted this event in collaboration with numerous community partners; such as the police, public health, mental health and testimonial speakers. On Friday, November 5, 2010, nine M.S.S. students from the Gr.10 Native Studies course attended Sounding Out Indigenous Poetics at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario.

Rake and Run Oct 2010 Rake and Run
Organized by Student’s Council, the Rake and Run was an event held for students to simply go and rake lawns of Midland Secondary School’s neighbours. The purpose was to give back to our community and with all the leaves falling, what better way is there to help out? Look for articles in the Midland Mirror and SNAP! Magazine.
